Recommended Paint Colors

All students! This is my basic recommended list. From this minimum palette you can mix at least 95% of all the colors you will ever need. You can always add more colors as you go.

- Basic Oil Paint colors

(click here if your would like to go straight to supplier:

Titanium Zinc White 150ml (or Gamblin Radiant White)

Cadmium Yellow Light 37ml

Permanent Rose 37ml OR Alizarin Permanent 37ml

Cadmium red medium 37ml

Ultramarine Blue  37ml

Burnt Sienna 37ml

Burnt Umber 37ml

Phthalo Blue (green shade) 37ml or Winsor and Newton Winsor Blue (green shade) 37ml

I recommend artists grade paints such as Gamblin Artists Oils or Winsor and Newton Artists Grade for best results, however If budget is an issue and you are not sure if you will take oil painting forward, buy the colors in student grade ranges instead for example:

Winsor and Newton “Winton’ range - this is Winsor and Newton student grade range or

Gamblin 1980 range - this is Gamblins student grade range.

Canvas

Beginners -

Please purchase a Centurion Oil primed Linen Pad 12 x 16” for class. This approx is 47.50 from Amazon or sometimes you can find it on sale at Jerry’s Artarama for around $32 - (add other items to get free shipping). This has 10 sheets and should last you the whole 8 week course. We will use this for our finished paintings.

Intermediate to Advanced Students

I also recommend the Centurion oil Primed Linen pads for painting in class though you may also want to buy alternatives such as stretched canvas as we progress.

Brushes

I recommend synthetic hair brushes only.

If you have brushes, bring them.

Basically you want a range of synthetic brushes in various sizes. I use mostly long flats.

For further recommendations and guidance on brushes I have provided some options below.

General other items - you will need:

Disposable Palette paper pad - (I like the 12 x 16’ pad from Blick)

Palette cup or other small receptacle to hold linseed oil. A small ramekin you might have at home is fine for this.

Small palette knife: Liquitex small knife #14

Gamblin Refined Linseed oil 500ml

16 x 20 Hardboard Panel

2 small bulldog clips (you may have these at home)

Roll of kitchen paper towels

Black Fine point Sharpie

Watercolor pencil in a neutral color such as umber, ochre, light brown (optional - for drawing on canvas)

Old plastic grocery bags to carry wet brushes home (bring one or two bags to each class with brushes in it.)

Ipad or smart phone if you have one. Adventageous though not essential.

To wash brushes at home:

Small empty Jam jar or spice jar

Small bottle of Murphy’s oil soap

Small bottle Dawn dish detergent

Small jar of Jacks Linseed studio soap or other brush cleaner

Gamblin odorless mineral spirits (not essential, only for occasional use)

Brush recommendation (guidance) and optional extras

OIL BRUSHES

Brushes are expensive! Apologies about that. If you have your good quality brushes (designed for oil or acrylics), feel free to bring them.

I recommend synthetic bristle brushes with long handles (approx 10”) in mainly flats or long flats, plus one brush for drawing (we will be drawing in paint) such as a long slim filbert or rigger brush.

If you don’t have brushes I have put together a couple of recommended starter Brush sets - you only need to choose one of these sets. You can always add more as you go if you need to,

I have chosen these for affordability without sacrificing quality.

Note that brush sizes vary wildly between manufacturers so don’t worry that these appear to differ between sets - these will give roughly equivalent collections of brushes.
